A Beautiful Noise – The Neil Diamond Musical at Orpheum Theatre

The Broadway musical, written by the lauded playwright Anthony McCarten, was produced by Robert Gaudio and the two-time Tony Award-winner Ken Davenport. With over 6 decades of Diamond’s music, the team created a “musical collage” with showtunes that take on "lives of their own”, as McCarten stated in an interview with The Boston Globe for the Neil Diamond Musical. 

This heart-wrenching two-hour-and-15-minute tale comprises two acts. The first act ends with the beloved number Sweet Caroline, followed by a 15 min intermission. After restocking on refreshments, rejoin the show for another hour of outstanding acting and storytelling.

The Production

Many lifelong lovers of Neil Diamond still remember when his 1976 album, A Beautiful Noise, first dropped. They will never forget seeing the musical of the same name LIVE as it came to Omaha. The jukebox musical delighted audiences from the opening act with a full engaging story and catchy songs. 

The musical soon ended up on NYC Broadway, running from late 2022 into early 2024 at the Broadhurst Theatre. Talents like Will Swenson (playing Neil Diamond), Mark Jacoby (present-day Diamond), and Linda Powell (The Doctor) reprised their roles from the Boston production. 

The musical swiftly took to the road. With a fresh new cast, including the American Idol winner, Nick Fradiani. Fradiani announced he would play the role of the young Neil Diamond. 

The Story

The tale follows the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Famer, starting in the present dayreminiscing from a therapist’s office. As Diamond, he talks about how he can no longer sing like he used to while the doctor helps him navigate the trials brought by this reality throughout A Beautiful Noise. 

The story goes all the way back to Diamond's Brooklyn childhood, discussing his introduction to music and all the good and bad times since then, including his journey to stardom and fight with depression. But, what die-hard fans anticipate most is re-experiencing Diamond’s catalog of songs in the Neil Diamond Musical.

While the Broadway show was nominated for Outstanding Production of a Musical and Outstanding New Broadway Musical, the actors were the real stars. Hoggett, Hurder, and LeProtto won Outstanding Ensemble in a Broadway Show for their dance routines. Other award nominations include the Drama Desk Award and Drama League Awards.
