Out-of-work actor Daniel finds himself losing custody in a messy divorce situation, yet all he wants is to stay being part of his kids’ lives. Willing to do anything for these younglings, he gets creative — taking an alter ego, Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire. Juggling two identities in his ex-wife’s house, it’s a story that’ll forever change their lives. Daniel soon finds that he’s getting more than what he’d bargained for as a father.

The musical production stays true to the original movie storyline while introducing new elements such as songs, technology, and pop culture references. Though initial planning began in 2015, led by producer Kevin McCollum, the musical project was placed on “creative hiatus” and emerged with a new creative team by 2018 — Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick composing the score, and John O’Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick writing the book. Jerry Zaks then became the show’s director. In 2019, Mrs. Doubtfire premiered in Seattle, with Rob McClure playing the role of Daniel Hillard/Mrs. Doubtfire. On March 9 2020, the musical kicked off Broadway previews with a planned opening night shortly after, however these were postponed due to the pandemic at the time. The musical officially opened on Broadway by 2021. In 2023, its first North American national tour kicked off with Rob McClure reprising his Tony Award-nominated role as Daniel Hillard/Mrs.Doubtfire, and his real-life wife Maggie Lakis will play Miranda Hillard.
