“Refreshing. Gritty. Endlessly effective. ‘The Outsiders’ has been made with so much love and sincerity. It is fair to call it golden.” – The New York Times

SYNOPSIS
The Outsiders is based upon S.E. Hinton’s groundbreaking 1967 coming of age novel of the same name.
It is 1967, Tulsa. Social and class divisions are on the forefront of almost everything, and it is especially tough when you’re living in poverty.
Ponyboy Curtis, a 14-year old orphan is caught up in a massive rivalry between two gangs – the working-class Greasers and the guys from the ‘right side of the train tracks’, the Socs, and have no choice but to flee. When a face-off between the two rival gangs are announced, they are left with no choice but to return – and are faced with dire consequences.
Add the cuffed jeans, unfiltered cigarettes, a nickname, girls, and the self-discovery of a have-not adolescent in a must-have world, and massive conflict steps to the front line. Faced with violence and its fallout, the discord between the two gangs with their roots in their social standing, the risk of harm, vulnerability, the decision between running away from problems and facing them head-on, the importance of family, and of course, romance, resulting in questions about the fragility of life.
Ultimately, The Outsiders is a tale about friendship, family and belonging, underlined by the realization that there are “lots of good in this world”.
“‘The Outsiders’ has a heart of gold and the power to inspire an entire generation.” – Entertainment Weekly

“More pulse-pounding than anything else on Broadway.” – Time Out New York
HISTORY AND LEGACY
The Outsiders, with music and lyrics by Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance from the folk rock band Jamestown Revival, alongside Justin Levine, and book by Adam Rapp and Justin Levine, was first announced in 2019, and first took the stage at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2023. The unforgettable production with its slight Americana sound turned Broadway upside down when it transferred to the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, landing four Tony Awards among which a Tony Award for Best Musical, an Outer Critics Circle Award, two Drama Desk Awards, a Theatre World Award, and a Chita Rivera Award, among plenty of nominations.
The retro classic on stage is everything one could possibly hope and wish for – it is striking and different; is an intricate amalgamation of sound, light, and high-powered movement, resulting in powerful imagery that will linger in the audience’s minds long after the curtain has fallen; it boasts a wonderfully solid score delivered with powerhouse vocals; it oozes theatricality and breathtaking creative choices that rises like cream to the top; and without a doubt, The Outsiders is destined to become a classic, just like its literary source.
“The best new musical of the season.” – The New York Post
