It’s bound to be a beautiful night of harmonies as RIVER CITY MIXED CHORUS brings a performance of Craig Hella Johnson’s three-part oratorio, “Considering Matthew Shepard” to the Orpheum Theater - Omaha. Chronicling the life and tragedy of the late Matthew Shepard, it’s a full circle modern-day oratorio that weaves passages from his personal journal, tales from Shepard’s parents, texts from Rumi, Hildegard von Bingen, and a variety of musical notes that transforms the tale of tragedy into one of hope, love, and social justice.
Deeply moved by the tragic murder of a young gay man over 25 years ago, conductor Craig Hella Johnson composed a touching musical response to the realities that queer communities face. Though it’s a heavy topic to tackle, his creation leaves audiences inspired, joyous, and changed.
