A Midsummer Night's Dream

Feuding fairies, mismatched lovers, weddings, comic confusion, fauns, peaseblossoms and moths serving a queen; superb technique, stunning costumes, breathtaking sets, wonderful music - what a spring festival! And let’s be frank: our lives could do with a little bit of magic - that midsummer night’s dream kind of ballet magic!

William Shakespeare’s romantic fairy-tale comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream has long been a favorite among theatregoers around the globe. With its witty humour, mind-blowing intrigue, incredible, adorable characters, and of course, heaps of magic, the iconic work has seen many interpretations and adaptations since its premiere around 1596.

On the other side, German composer Felix Mendelssohn composed the much-adored Overture in E major, Op. 21 as a teenager, as a standalone work outside of the play. He later revisited it to develop it into a full concert overture, containing the incidental music, including the well-known Wedding March. The full work, in suite form, accompanying a performance of the play, premiered in 1843.

And now, over four centuries later, the American Midwest Ballet is in their 16th season, and will be breathing new life into the classic tale once more! The company for this season's run of A Midsummer Night's Dream includes the talents of CEO and artistic director Erika Overturff and ballet master Erin Alarcón, alongside dancers Nora Carr, Elena Carter, Ryan Christopher, Sophie Graham, Eliza Harden, Alexandria Hoffman, Jack Kadzis, Casey Kelley, Leah Kressin, and Kogan Larsen among others. With choreography by Oskar Antunez, the American Midwest Ballet’s rendition of A Midsummer Night’s Dream follows the original tale closely - but with a few balletic twists. It’s all the charm, dazzle, and dreaminess you could possibly expect, topped by talent that will have you on the edge of your seat!
