Wicked at Orpheum Theatre

Stephen Schartz’s genius and talent breach generation gaps, from beloved Disney films to pure Broadway magic. The hit-making virtuoso who brought Godspell and Pippin to the world has now breathed life into audience-favorite Wicked, which comes to Orpheum Theatre for the summer playbill. 

Wicked cleverly weaves bureaucratic criticisms, unusual heroes, and unlikely romance within a medley of catchy tracks, including Defying Gravity, which has taken Broadway by storm.

Synopsis

The tale follows Elphaba, the illegitimate daughter of the wife of Munchkinland’s governor. Despite her family and identity struggles, Elphaba makes it into the esteemed Shiz University, where she rooms with social butterfly Galinda. Two complete opposites don't take to each other at first but soon become fond of each other. 

Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worse when Elphaba notices nefarious crimes against the Animals, a sentient race often tormented by oppressive forces. Galinda and Elphaba seek the Wizard for help, but the Wizard disappointingly offers little assistance. A let-down Elphaba leaves the Emerald City to fight for justice for the Animals, leaving everything else behind. 

Meanwhile, Galinda - known as Glinda - climbs the social ladder, marries Fiyero, the Captain of the Guard, and pursues an socialite lifestyle. Elphaba unwittingly earns Fiyero’s eye as he falls in love with her. Will the couple’s love grow unburdened, or will Elphaba’s political drive push Fiyero away, distance her from allies, and destroy her?

Production

Wicked kicked off its first debut in 2003 at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. As its popularity spread, it made its way into new theatres year after year, receiving international acclaim with performances in London, Ireland, Mexico, Germany, and even Australia. Its capacity to bring in audiences also prompted Hollywood producers to release a two-part motion picture based on the Broadway show, that hit cinemas in November 2024.

Wicked scored numerous awards during its heyday in the 2000s, including 2 Drama Desk Awards, three Tony awards, and a Grammy award for Best Musical Theater Album. The cast and crew performing at Orpheum Theatre on Tuesday 23rd June 2026 promise to deliver a fantastic performance.
